Creation of regional networks in Europe

The Italian model of regional networks is also being promoted in three European regions, which have been chosen on the basis of the level of interest shown, with the aim of sharing the experiences of the networks in Italy and contributing to the diffusion of GPP, also at a local level.

The specific aims of the regional networks are as follows:

  • To disseminate information and raise awareness about GPP at a regional level
  • To stimulate debate on core subjects regarding public procurement, among local bodies in the geographical areas concerned.
  • To favour the implementation and exchange of good practices.

In terms of support material the networks will be issued with

  • The updated CD-Rom Open Book of the Working Group on Green Procurement of the Agenda 21 local Italian association, translated into English.
  • New GPP manual of the Province of Cremona, also translated into English

Interested regions and promoting bodies

The GPP regional networks have been activated in three European regions:

  • Catalonia - Spain
  • Lodzkie - Poland
  • Prahova - Romania

For Catalonia, the promoting body is Xarxa de Ciutats i Pobles cap a la sostenibilitat (Network of towns and villages for sustainability) which has its headquarters in the Diputaciò de Barcelona (Provincial headquarters of Barcelona). Technical support for the Catalan network for GPP is provided by Ecoinstitut.

For the region of Lodz, the City of Lodz will take on the chief role of promoting the network to other towns in its own region, with technical support provided by the European Regional Centre for Ecohydrology.

In Romania, the Judet di Prahova is promoting the network in its own geographical area.

During the launch phase of these regional networks various in-depth meetings will be held with each of the promoting bodies of the GPP network, in their own regions.

The meetings are an opportunity to present and analyse the experiences of the Italian regions within the project GPPinfoNET and for a programme of activities that are appropriate to the stage reached by the European regions involved.

Following this, each organisation, with the support of the regional Technical Secretariat will start to promote the network and will gather support from within its own geographical area.

Planned meetings:

  • 23 February 2010 at the Provincial headquarters in Barcelona
  • 10 March 2010 at Lodz Town Hall
